My Story

I was a person that had never considered a whippet for a pet, as i had grown up with small dogs like Jacks, but then mine and Jets paths crossed,
As i was on my way to work early one morning , i saw a group of men standing around a dog in a field, kicking him to make him run more,  I stopped the car and walked across to them and asked who's dog it was and this large tall man with a heavy Irsih accent say he belonged to him and it seems he was in training to be a coursing dog, and they were building up his stamima!, He asked me what i wanted, and i said that dog, i'll give you £200 for it (Thankfully i had not gone into town and paid the rent ) to my surprize it was a deal. I picked up the dog and he even gave me his pedigree papers which he had on him, and i happily handed over my rent money, I renamed him Jet and took him to  the vets, who gave him a good check-up. He was still a pup only 10 months old with more scars on his small body  than that of a very old working dog ,and after alot of TLC to gain his trust Jet became a very dear and loyal campanion, he would come to work with me, at a private Rescue centre for pets and wildlife, and i would often find him racing around the park looking for me, with the owner calling staff to grab her dogs,27 of them chasing the freeranging chickens, ducks, turkey and geese along with the goats and pigs running around with vistors darting all over the place, it seemed Jet had once again opened the back door to come look for me and let all the rest out to have some fun! He was so full of character and always up to no good, and for the first time in my life  i had to put child locks on everything, he would get the food and eat it all, anything and everything, i came home from work one day to find the cat shut in the cupboard meowing, he had opened it and ripped up a box of cornflakes and pulled the ring on a tin of bakebeans. the mess on the floor was unbelievable , another time we went out in the eveing, and got home around 11pm to find he had consumed a whole box of curry power, the aroma in the house was really awful and there we sat outside on a cold Novermber night to around 2 am, the smell was so bad  in the house that Jet chose to sit outside with us in the cold shivering, and yes still passing wind very loudly .  On Saturday mornings i use to take Jet to the pub that i cleaned and he was always at my side so close sometime you could trip over him, well this Saturday morning after a couple of minutes i noticed he was gone, so i called out to him "baby boy" and he would always come running and jump up into my arms, ( i think he though he was a small lap dog,) only a few times i would land on my back with him still in my arms. anyway i called him a couple of times and no baby boy, it was a large pub! After a few worried minutes i found him, laying behind the bar,  it turned out he had found the slop bucket which was full, and i now had a dog on the floor out cold, and that was only half the trouble, i then had to get him home, so there i was walking though the market with a outcold whippet across my shoulder, everyone though he was dead till i told them he was outcold and drunk!! i think he had a cracker of a hangover and it was a few days before he was up to his usual self, another time when i was seeing a lady out jet wanted to get her attension but because he was behind her, and in front of me , he nipped her bottom, well it got her attension alright as she turned around and slapped my face, she would'nt believe me when i told her the dog had done it, as he just sat there looking up at her!,  and worse still my partner at the time also slapped my face, Jet quite often got me into situations, there was a time when i took him into one of those shops that sell hiking, camping and all that kind of stuff, the store manger was bending over  and refilling one of the bottom shelves Jet just could'nt resist it ,I saw what he was about to do and still was unable to stop him it only took a second as Jet poked the bloke up the rear end causing him to fall into the box, i told the bloke how sorry i was saying that Jet has a habbit of doing that sometimes i dont think he really beleaved me .  Sadley Jets health detereated he went blind and deaf, and it is believed he had a brain tumour which was affecting his behaviour, Jet became very stressed as he was very protective over us, which stressed him even more,Jet was only 7 years old when i made the sad choice of letting him go, i could't bear to see him suffering any longer  he also had other lumps appearing on his torso, which could have been cancerous Jets first 10 months was pain , cold and hunger but the next six years plus, he never wanted for anything, it was nothing but the best for my baby boy, and as much as i love all dog , but now because of Jet, Whippets are the only breed of dog for me now.
