My Story

My sister and I found her at a corner pet store. Among the litter, she was the smallest and the most timid.  But we instantly thought she was THE MOST ADORABLE little puppy girl. The next day we came back and saw our mini favourite alone and shivering in the cage. We already knew she was ours.

She was called 'Chica' (meaning small girl in Spanish) very briefly at some point.  While it was a cute name, it was not her original one. I had to name her 'Chicken' because she loved to eat it, she made strange clucking sounds, she walked funny, and her legs looked a bit like drumsticks. And yes, she nibbled on her legs often. It's true.

Our parents were quite against keeping our pet.  She gave them enough reason.  Chicken chewed up everything: her wicker beds, her toys, our dining chairs, etc. Being a terrier, she had chased (sometimes fought and caught) birds, dug many small holes and did her number twos in the backyard (which we had to avoid like landmines) She dragged her bum along the carpet and made a toilet out of our laundry room where we kept her at night. She was also a VERY fussy eater.

Over the years, the whole family loved her more and more. She was really a kind of security system:  an alarm, a fierce security guard (this tiny thing once latched onto a tradesman's ankle thinking he was a burglar) and sometimes a security blanket. She comforted my dad when he was stressed out and sick, she comforted my sister during a break-up, she comforted me when I came home tired and when we were all grieving after dad passed away.  We will never forget the times she stood barking intently at dad's empty chair outside.

Chicken knew she was a family member. She always sought our company, although she was generally anti-social to others. We think it's because she was not regularly socialised with other dogs and people. In retrospect though, I think it was also her nature.  From puppy-hood, she kept aloof from her littler while they had tumbled and spun around her in the pet shop. But she loved being with us, her real family.

I don't remember the date or circumstances of her heart problem's onset. We took her to the vet a few years before and they diagnosed her with heart disease, which caused heart murmurs.  One of her valves was faulty and the heart struggled to pump blood in her system.  We did our best to maintain her health and she was a happy, if not spoiled, little dog despite her condition.  This year 2010, she started getting seizures.  She had one on the 3rd of July, the day before her 14th birthday.  Her health was deteriorating for a while since then, until finally, she broke our hearts when she passed away at around 11am this morning at Norwest Animal Hospital. There are no words to describe the horrible moments of this loss and I don't know if I could ever have another pet again.

Friends will remember our little Chicken as the dog who could tuck herself in her blanket and who was a very effective doorbell.

But our family will forever remember The Nenains as someone who had a huge heart (literally and figuratively), who was scared of her own farts, who ate flies, liked to play reverse psychology before eating her food, watched out for us, who gave us so much joy and unconditional love, and the one who always made us all feel at home. See you soon, rrraaihhnss!! we love you...Rest in Peace
