My Story

In memory of "Linus". a.k.a "Joe Panther or "Joe". born ,March 2002. Our gentle giant. Looking back to the time I first took him in, It was supposed to be a temporary stay with me until I could find him a good home. As time passed it wasn't long before I became attached to him. As a kitten he was your typical little "buster brown", getting into thing's and giving the other three adult cat's a hard time.. They all accepted him well in spite of the harassment they got from this tiny little guy. Like the other's I raised him as an indoor cat and leashed trained him as a kitten to take walks with me. What made Linus so special was that as he got older he had began to literally understand much of what I said to him. Just as with all of my cat's, then and now, I speak to them often. Some, like Linus seemed to pick up on this more so than others. Linus had many names and responded to them all. Life for him wasn't without it's troubles though. At age two he a double ear infection which required an Elizabethan collar and drain tubes for a week. He suffered from allergies and from time to time had to make trip's to the vets for shots. At age 8 He was diagnosed with urinary tract disorder and spent the rest of his life eating prescription cat food. We almost lost him then. Linus' life story however is more than just major events in his life. It is a lesson of how two spirits of different species can make that "special connection" that only a true pet lover can understand. Linus, a.k.a. "Joe" had an almost human personality. It were as if a simple look or action from him in a certain way told me what he wanted or was thinking. As a cat lover for many year's I have come to realize that cat's do indeed have the ability to learn not only our language but also , and most importantly, they seem to become a part of us. They can display almost human like qualities. Linus was a gift. In his eleven year's and eight month's here with me this gentle giant of a cat gave unconditional love. The bad news.... . Linus hadn't been himself. On October 23rd Linus was having trouble again. My wife and I took him to the vets and expected another short stay and some med's we could give him at home.. On October 25th we got a call from the vets who had treated him since he was a kitten. They said we need to go there to talk about Linus. He was suffering from kidney failure and this time it was not good. Although he appeared healthy at the vets . they told us that this condition was terminal. We could have taken him home for the weekend but they could not promise that he would pass away over the weekend. We had to make the dreaded decision. This was so sudden, How could we have missed this ? he seemed fine just a few days ago. We had no way of knowing that this condition was going on for some time but he showed no outward signs until the last minute. The good bye........ My wife and I decided that he should not suffer and so it was.. We were given a room to spend as much time with him as we needed. How sad it was. happy to see us, I could tell he thought he was going home. We said our good bye's and waited outside. Few words were spoken as we drove home from the vets. shocked and in denial I spent the evening building Linus a casket , one fit for a king. I buried him on our property the next day on a cold, rainy October morning. Hippocrates said, " The soul is the same in all creature's although the body is different." As a cat lover for some 53 year's I have come to believe that this true. Like so many that have come and gone before him. we can take comfort in knowing we did our absolute best for him. He is sadly missed as I set on the screen porch that he loved so much, Basking in the warm summer sun. Linus loved the warm sunshine. "Sunshine Joe" we called him. To anyone reading these word's and is grieving for the loss of your pet, no matter what kind it was, remember, you too can take comfort in knowing that you did your best for them. Time will pass and the pain will lessen. but the good memories will live on forever. These are what you hold on to. As with Linus, focus on the good times and the unconditional love they gave. They are truly gifts for us to love and care for. I myself had brush with death and it is from that experience that I know that there is a wonderful place for us and our pets as well beyond what we know here. To Linus- I miss you "Handsome Fella" . The big cat at my feet at night has gone but I have doubt that we will meet again one day. Be patient my friend and may the lord be with you.
