My Story

Princess first lived with my husband's uncle.  She was a good dog to him.  She lived with him for years.  When my husband's uncle got to where he could not live on his own anymore Princess went to live with my father-in-law.  She had other dogs to live with and a big yard.  In 2000 my father-in-law passed away.  Princess was obsessively licking her paw and my mother-in-law couldn't figure out why.  Then a co-worker asked how much attention did my father-in-law paid her.  It was a lot.  Once my mother-in-law stepped  up the attention Princess stopped the licking.  In June of 2005 my mother-in-law had a sudden heart attack and passed away.  The first thing we did was go to her house and pick up Princess.  She was already 15 years old.  So we knew she was not going to be with us long but we were determined to make her time with us the best.

She adapted well to living with us.  So that was great.  In August of 2005 we went through Hurricane Katrina.  We were without power.  The house was very hot even though we had the windows all open.  I  thought right there that she would not survive.  She came through with flying colors.

Each  year our dogs are in a parade during Mardi Gras.  We couldn't leave Princess at home.  But we knew she would not be able to walk the 15 blocks at her age.  So my husband made her a float.  I remember pushing her when some obnoxious lady said, "Must be nice for that dog to ride in the parade instead of walk."  I looked at the woman and said, "I hope when you are 80 years old someone cares enough about you to give you a ride."  I couldn't believe someone would say that without knowing the circumstances.  She loved being on the float and having so many people play attention to her.

One day there was a squirrel in the yard.  All three of the dogs were anxious to get out.  I opened the door and they all ran out.  However, about 3 feet from the door Princess pooped out.  But for a brief moment you would have sworn you were not looking at a dog that was elderly.

In October of 2006 my world fell apart when we took Princess to the vet because she was not eating.  We found out she had a large tumor on her tongue.  We decided to do our best to make her feel loved no matter how long she had left.  She was a beautiful, sweet dog and even though her time with us was short it was wonderful.
