My Story

Rockne was born in Chicago along with his brother in October of 1999.  I came to meet Rock as a five month old pup with his brother at our friend Christel's house.  His birth parents had brought them out to the forest preserve to introduce all of us to their new litter.  It was that day that Rock adopted me as his new father.  I swear that dog never left my side.  I followed me all over the camp grounds.  Both my wife and my mother were there watching our interaction.

My birthday arrived about a month later.  Much to my surprise I received Rock for my birthday. He was the best gift ever.  When I got him I had to train him to do everything.  He had no clue how to walk on a leash.  The first time we tried, he just went limp on his belly into the grass.  He of course eventually got it.  Rock was extremely intellegent and picked things up quick.

Rock was a people dog.  He was the most wonderful care taker of children that I knew.  When any of  our kids were sick he made sure he was right by their bed.  He was the guardian of my nieces and nephew from the day they were born.  He loved all of his grandparents who went out of their way to love him and feed him.  He especially loved his Mom and Dad.  He was at every important event that we had at our house.  Whether it was a graduation, birthday, holiday, wedding, or St. Paddy's party my Moose was there keeping the kids and adults happy.  They sometimes rode him like a horse.  He was also good with other animals.  He had many animal friends and family.  There were the cats; Kenzie, Gracie, Commet, and of couse Mick.  There was his extended dog family; Momma, Sam, Erin, Diesel, Mac, and Francis.  He was of course the top dog.

You could always count on Rock for big wet kiss.  Just ask my God daughter.  Her first real word, by the way, was Rock.  Rock was extremely friendly even though he was an imposing figure.  He loved to be rubbed on his chest and belly.  A little rub on the white spot on his chest and he was your best friend.  The real way to Rock's heart though was through his stomach.  The big guy could eat.  He is the first and only "Bread Hound" that I know.  He could hear me cutting bread from about a mile away.  His favorite treat was lunch meat ends from Caputo's.  He would know when came through the door with those bags that his favorite treat was in there.  The object was to get him to give you "The Face" or his famous fake air bark before receiving the treat.

Rock started to get sick early last year.  He had some surgery that did not go well.  He started having seizures because of it.  He also started developing tumors on his body.  We were able to combat some of this with a change in his diet.  My good friend Bob had recommended a specific food after his dog had passed.  This helped prolong his life.  Rock was always a pup at heart, even until the end.  We took him camping with us to Shelbyville.  He played with three other dogs and and a large group of campers.  He chased all of the bike riders around.  I think it is ironic that I met him at a camp ground and his last trip was to a camp ground.
