My Story

Michelle and I had been dating for over a year when we got Tomahawk. I remember when I first saw him he looked like a horse who had just been born. He was all legs and very awkward. He was a mixed breed dog, but mainly a Red Bone Coonhound. He had a very unique color, almost a reddish bronze. In white, he had a “Y” on his forehead that made him look so cute. As I look back now I regret not being able to give him what he needed when he was little. He was a coonhound and wanted to be outside. A year before Shell and I got married I was able to give that to him. Tomahawk and I moved into the Clubhouse Rd house in 1995. It was just us, a boy and his dog. Tomahawk was an incredible watch dog. I felt safe with him in the house. He could tell when someone was walking by, when a dog was loose, or if someone was coming up to the house. I used to have a steady diet of chicken fingers when I lived there alone with Tomahawk. One day I decided to cook hamburgers. I did not cook often and was looking forward to the burgers that would last me the entire week. I prepared them and had them sitting nicely ready to enter the oven when the phone rang. I returned a bit later to discover that Tomahawk had eaten the entire 3 pounds of red meat. I called the vet and they said he would be fine, and he was. Soon came the dogs Phoebe and Emmitt with our 2 daughters Sami and Sydney not far behind. Through new houses, new dogs, children, and even 3 rabbits, he was always there. I never thought he would outlast his younger dog siblings, he did by 5 yrs. When he was 13 or so, I really started preparing myself for his death. After all, big dogs are not supposed to live as long. I started saying things to myself like, “This may be his last Christmas”. The years passed and he actually started looking better. Once he got to be 16, I started to believe he would always be around. In November, we had a big scare with him and took him to the vet. Usually when you take a 17 yr old dog to the vet it does not turn out very well. Well this one did and after a few weeks he was better than ever. We lost Phoebe a couple of weeks later and I prayed to God to give Tomahawk one more Christmas. My prayers were answered and we had a wonderful Christmas. Four days after Christmas we got a new pup, Dexter. Michelle has always wanted a small dog and I wanted her to have it. Dexter has been a blessing to this family helping us through some difficult times. Tomahawk was doing very well toward the end. On Sunday morning, Jan 16th Michelle went to let him out and found him in the middle of a seizure. I scooped him up and rushed him to the vet. They gave him 2 doses of valium, but the seizure did not subside. We had to put him down. The vet said his heart rate was over 200 beats a minute when I brought him in. He must have had the heart of lion to withstand that at his age. He was an incredible dog and the hole he leaves in this family will never be filled. I miss him so much. Tomahawk was always there for me no matter what and I was there for him until the very end.
